Suppose you are using cross-project dependencies to manage several projects. If each project has a large number of tasks, identifying tasks from external projects can seem daunting. There are several methods of identifying external tasks – this discussion will focus on using the External Task field.
When two projects are linked with dependencies, Microsoft Project will show external tasks in light gray on the task sheet. In the following illustration, Deliverable 1 complete is an external predecessor to Task 5:
As mentioned, if this project has a large number of tasks, finding external tasks might seem difficult. Simply insert the field External Task and use Autofilter to focus in on any external tasks as shown in the following illustration:
